Shark Trust Eggcase Hunt at Wembury! |
|
29.11.06
Following the recent stormy weather, those of us down at the Shark Trust decided an afternoon winter rummage for eggcases on Wembury Beach was in order! A group of three of us, Ali and Holly from the Shark Trust, and Eric Stephen from APECs spent a delightful couple of hours wandering along the strandline in the winter sunshine. During our hunt, we found 2 thornback ray, 4 spotted ray, 1 small-eyed ray, 3 undulate ray and 7 spotted catshark eggcases, as well as enjoying a picnic on the beach and being amazed at the complete randomness of some of the flotsam and jetsam we found!

The recent stormy weather meant that the strandline was huge!

Eggcases wasn't all we found - onshore winds had washed hundreds of 'by-the-wind-sailors' onto the beach!

Wintertime is an excellent time to get out on the beach & hunt for eggcases, particularly following storms or strong onshore winds, when large amounts of strandline material is washed up. If you're wanting to organise a winter eggcase hunt, take a look at Eggcase Hunt Resources for some handy hint & tips, keep an eye on the weather and vanishing daylight and don't forget to let us know what you found!
