Welcome to the Great Eggcase Hunt Website!

Why does the Shark Trust want you to record eggcases?

In recent decades several species of skate and ray around the British coast have dramatically declined in numbers.  The empty eggcases that wash up on to our beaches all year round are an easily accessible source of information on the whereabouts of skate and ray nursery grounds.

The identification of these critical areas will enable the Shark Trust to propose conservation measures, in order to reverse the decline of these charismatic animals.

The Great Eggcase Hunt Mapped!

The results of the Great Eggcase Hunt have been mapped!  Is your home beach, or favourite stretch of the coastline covered? If not, the Shark Trust encourages you to get involved!

Check out where the 10 most commonly-found eggcases wash up around the UK and Ireland, and how your information could help identify critically important nursery grounds for sharks, skates and rays!  VIEW MAPS

Attention All Divers: Have you seen an underwater eggcase?

If you're spending time underwater this summer why not keep an eye out for underwater eggcases!  Never easy to spot - often camoflagued with seaweed, sand and gravel - the presence of underwater, in-situ eggcases can be indicative of a nursery area for sharks, skates and rays.

If you're lucky - and eagle-eyed - enough to spot an underwater eggcase, please submit all the details to the Shark Trust - including any photos.  Find out MORE...

IMPORTANT: Please don't disturb underwater eggcases - they contain a live shark, skate or ray which may have been incubating for up to 12 months!
